1/15/2008 - DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- Free income tax assistance, preparation, and electronic filing are available through the base Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Office from Jan. 23 to April 15. Most members who file their tax returns electronically at the tax center and, by selecting direct deposit, may receive their refunds in as little as one week. Davis-Monthan is fortunate to have a strong VITA program to assist you with your income tax questions and filing tax forms. The program is staffed by experienced volunteers, each of whom is specifically trained to address military-specific tax issues, such as combat zone tax benefits and the Earned Income Tax Credit guidelines.

Active-duty members and their spouses may make required appointments starting Jan. 16, and retirees may make required appointments starting Feb. 13 by calling 228-3489. VITA appointment hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Taxpayers must bring the following items when visiting the VITA office for tax preparation: Military ID card; Social Security Card or record of Social Security number for yourself, spouse, and all dependents; names and birth dates of taxpayer, spouse and dependents; the federal (and state, if applicable) tax package the individual received in the mail; Forms W-2, 1099-R and other statements of reportable income such as Form SSA-1099; all appropriate expense information (medical, home mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable contributions, child care expenses); information on rental property and investment sales; applicable powers of attorney; and should bring a copy of the 2006 federal (and state) tax return, if available. For direct deposit of refunds a blank check or proof of bank routing number and account number is required.

VITA is located in the Retiree Activities Office, Building 3210, on the Northwest corner of Craycroft and Ironwood Streets (next to the base chapel and across from the Mirage Officers' Club).
