DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --
The 355th Wing was redesignated the 355th Fighter Wing April 26.
The 355th was previously a "tactical fighter wing" from April 1962 through September 1979 and a "fighter wing" from October 1991 through May 1992, when the names "tactical" and "strategic" were removed from unit designations.
On May 1, 1992, before the 41st and 43rd Electronic Combat Squadrons were reassigned to the 55th Wing, the word "fighter" was removed from the 355th Wing's title, due to it having both C-130s and A-10s.
The redesignation involved changing all the signs on base, including on buildings, doors, doormats, in parking lots, and even the wing flag. The total cost of the change was roughly $10,000, said Tech. Sgt. Adam Smith of the 355th Fighter Wing Treaty Compliance Office.
