The Arizona National Guard, as part of its first-ever community open house, is scheduled to muster in a mass military formation on the field at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Sunday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. - and all Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Airmen, employees and their families are invited.
The Arizona National Guard Muster and Community Expo will honor the service and sacrifice of Arizona's military families during the last 13 years of conflict and will recognize the state's military support community.
"Throughout wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the longest in American history, service members have placed their personal lives, and often civilian careers, on hold to go into harm's way to defend freedom," said Air Force Maj. Gen. Michael T. McGuire, the Adjutant General of Arizona. "I am proud of each Soldier and Airman who voluntarily serves our state and nation, and the time has come to recognize them."
Stadium gates will open to the general public at 9:30 a.m. admission free. The muster ceremony, a Guard tradition dating back to the first muster of the colonial militia in 1636, is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon, and will be followed by a community expo adjacent to the stadium from noon to 4 p.m.
All community members, veterans, families, friends and civic groups are invited to attend. The expo will feature food, live entertainment, attractions, children's activities, information booths, a job fair and more.
"We are working with numerous organizations and partners to host an afternoon of fun where you can fellowship with each other and the people who want to shake your hand and thank you for your service - myself included," said McGuire. "We hope our military and community partners will fill the stadium and celebrate with our National Guard members."
Arizona's Army and Air National Guard, a force of more than 7,500 Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen, have supported more than 10,000 individual deployments to overseas contingency operations since Sept. 11, 2001.
