Davis-Monthan Recognizes Women’s History Month

DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --  Members of the base community are invited to participate in the annual observance of Women's History Month, to be celebrated throughout this month with the theme of "Writing Women Back into History."

On March 2, President Barack Obama proclaimed this month as Women's History Month, calling upon the country to observe the month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that honor the history, accomplishments, and contributions of American women.

In his presidential proclamation he said, "Women's History Month is an opportunity for us to recognize the contributions women have made to our Nation, and to honor those who blazed trails for women's empowerment and equality."

The Women's History Month committee, chaired by Master Sgt. Carissa Saugstad, 755th Operational Support Squadron, will offer the following events for the base community this month:

- On March 15 there will be a luncheon at the Mirage Club at 11:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Maj. Kim "KC" Campbell, an A-10 pilot and Distinguished Flying Cross recipient. The cost is $9 for club members and $11 for non-members. To purchase a ticket, contact Senior Airman Tameshia Prentice at 228-4660, Senior Airman Crystal Cordroch at 228-7502, Staff Sgt. - On March 23 and 24 there will be a Women's History Month information fair set up outside the Davis-Monthan Base Exchange.

Additionally, the 355th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office will highlight several women from the base through a series of feature articles.

"This month, let us carry forth the legacy of our mothers and grandmothers. As we honor the women who have shaped our Nation, we must remember that we are tasked with writing the next chapter of women's history. Only if we teach our daughters that no obstacle is too great for them, that no ceiling can block their ascent, will we inspire them to reach for their highest aspirations and achieve true equality," said President Obama.
