48th RQS Airmen read to local Tucson children

TUCSON, Ariz. --  Airmen from the 48th Rescue Squadron participated in reading to children from Irene Erickson Elementary School Feb. 13, 2013.

"During our morning roll-call, Chief Atkins told us that there was going to be a volunteer opportunity to read to elementary school children," said Airman Emanuel Brave, 48th Rescue Squadron aircrew equipment apprentice. "So I thought I'd it would be cool to go."

Airman Bravo recalled an Air Force major visiting his class when he was in 5th grade and he wanted to do the same.

"Back in elementary school we had a major come into our classroom and talk to us," Bravo said. "He was from the base back where I lived and I thought it was pretty cool, so I thought it would cool to do the same for other kids."

Airman Bravo and his fellow rescue Airmen read to children gave them insight on what they do from day-to-day.

"I enjoyed how the kids were all excited and smiling," Bravo said. "You knew they were happy we came out to read to them."

This won't be the last time the 48th will help out at Erickson Elementary. In the near future they plan to help paint classrooms and plant trees.

Airmen from the 48th, both enlisted and officer, participate in volunteer events on a monthly basis, giving them the chance to get involved in the local community as well as bettering themselves.
