The 355th Fighter Wing was recently awarded with the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for the period of June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2011.

According to the Air Force Personnel Center, the Outstanding Unit Award is given by the Secretary of the Air Force to numbered units that have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement that clearly sets the unit above and apart from similar units.

"I am honored for the 355th Fighter Wing winning the Outstanding Unit Award," said Col. John Cherrey, 355th Fighter Wing commander. "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication to the mission by all Fighter Wing personnel."

The following are some of the accomplishments that led to the Fighter Wing receiving the award:

- Developed D-M's reusable energy with a 14.5 megawatt solar array plus six additional megawatts from Soaring Heights base housing. The number one sustainable energy project in the U.S. and the largest scope in Air Combat Command.

- Subject matter experts provided certification of a joint terminal attack controller simulator. This provided realistic training for more than 1,000 JTACs, saving $36 million.
- D-M's Judge Advocate was number one in the Air Force, receiving the 2010 American Bar Association's Legal Assistance for Military Personnel Office Award.

- Flawless care for dental Class 3 patients. Out of the 7,000 Airmen on base, only 13 individuals were nondeployable. Just 0.2 percent, number one in the Air Force.

For all members of the 355th Fighter Wing, receiving this award also means a new ribbon or oak leaf cluster can be displayed on their ribbon rack.
