Many enlisted members have the experience and ingenuity to become officers, but do not have the resources needed to make the transition. Unit and wing commanders have the chance to give these Airmen the opportunity by nominating them for the Leaders Encouraging Airmen Development Diversity Visitation Program.

The LEAD DVP program was created in 1995 by Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. Ronald Fogelman. Airmen who are selected for the program are sent on temporary duty assignments to the United States Air Force Academy where they are paired with a Cadet and live as USAFA members for three days. After the visit LEAD DVP Airmen can opt to become Cadets themselves.

"The program was developed to encourage diversity in the Academy," said Lt. Col (Ret.) Kevin Cannon, Academy liaison officer. "It gives those who may not have had the resources to go to college or may not have heard of the Air Force Academy the opportunity to expand their horizons."

The next LEAD DVP program is scheduled for Sept. 22-25.

"Airmen bring their operational experience and knowledge, and a different perspective to the Cadet Wing," said Capt. Chris Goshorn, LEAD program officer. "They aid in the overall development of future Air Force officers."

All nominated Airmen must meet the following requirements:

  · Must not be past their 23rd birthday on July 1 of the year they enter the USAFA
  · Must not be past their 22nd birthday by July 1 of the year they enter Preparatory School
  · Must not have dependents
  · Must be U.S. Citizens upon entry into the USAFA

Applicants must submit the following to Captain Goshorn by Aug. 17:

  · Letter of endorsement (with a form AF1786) signed by squadron commander and MPF
  · Copy of high school transcript
  · Copy of ACT/SAT scores
  · Completed LEAD DVP Application
