Fourth quarter award winners recognized

Nine Desert Lightning Team members received recognition during the fourth quarter awards ceremony held at the base theater here Jan. 21. The award winners were selected as the installation's top performers from 5,000 eligible for award consideration between October and December 2010.

The award winners from the DLT are:

Junior Civilian category
Mr. Troy Huggins, 355th Logistics Readiness Squadron
Mr. Huggins led his flight through the Air Force Audit Agency's tire and battery audit with zero discrepancies and directed 322 orders for the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group's 116-vehicle fleet. He also volunteered at a local elementary school during a book fair which raised more than $1,000. He spent more than 100 hours mentoring the Desert Willow school baseball team.

Intermediate Civilian category
Mr. Jeffery Somers, 355th Civil Engineer Squadron
Mr. Somers triaged and packaged more than 100 patients during the National Disaster Medical Systems Exercise, conducted live-fire training for four departments and 60 personnel and ensured compliance of $40,000 in personal protective equipment. He also volunteered 102 hours coaching local youth football teams and educated more than 150 children on home safety and fire escape plans.

Senior Civilian category
Mr. Clayton Moore, 355th Force Support Squadron
Mr. Moore's management led the Airman and Family Readiness Center to win the Air Combat Command Program of the Year award. He led a multi-service mock deployment for more than 250 children and provided transition briefings for more than 250 active duty members. He formed D-M Toastmasters International, earning a national charter. He was also a key note speaker on financial fitness and self-esteem for three local organizations.

Honor Guard
Airman 1st Class Diego Bermudez, 355th Fighter Wing Staff
Airman Bermudez displayed outstanding performance while representing the U.S. Air Force and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base at 24 official functions covering a 49,602 square-mile area of responsibility. His professionalism and uncompromising military bearing were instrumental at 12 retiree and veteran funerals.

Airman category
Airman 1st Class Nicholas Filip, 355th Operations Squadron
Airman Filip saved the AF more than $11,000 by salvaging 32 unserviceable life preservers. He augmented security forces during a seven-day Operational Readiness Exercise, earned certification as a Self-Aid Buddy Care instructor and maintained a 3.8 grade point average in his studies. He volunteers as a chapel media technician for 12 church services and was elected as President for the Protestant Parish Advisory Council.

Non-Commissioned Officer category
Staff Sgt. John Deviese, 355th Equipment Maintenance Squadron
Sergeant Deviese designed the first HH-60 Pave Hawk LED mount that was adopted AF-wide and guided six A-10 Thunderbolt II decel overhauls that saved more than $348,000. He maintained a 4.0 GPA for his Business Management degree, volunteered for Airmen Against Drunk Driving and assisted in installing a roof for Habitat for Humanity.

Senior Non-Commissioned Officer category
Master Sgt. Conrad Pascal, 355th Force Support Squadron
MSgt Pascal led the dining facility team through their annual Hennessy Inspection, earning the DFAC the top ranking in Air Combat Command. He completed the 40-hour 3M Manager Course and maintained a 3.7 GPA, earning six credits towards his bachelor's degree. He also led the 355th Mission Support Group retreat ceremony and directed the wing's extra duty flight program.


Company Grade Officer category
Capt. David Flowers, 355th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron
Captain Flowers led generation of 926 sorties, managed the A-10 demo team and discovered the cause of A-10 engine cowl cracks. He completed the Advanced Maintenance and Munitions Officer School and the Maintenance Instructor course. Captain Flowers also volunteered several hours for the San Diego Make-a-Wish Foundation for terminally-ill children.

Field Grade Officer category
Maj. Thomas Bozung, 55th Rescue Group
Major Bozung initiated bare-base deployment training, identified eight tasks for restructuring to meet ACC compliance and renovated the squadron schedule program. He completed Air Command and Staff College course work while simultaneously performing director of operations duties. He was also the aircraft commander for the squadron's Santas in Blue flight, flying in Santa with gifts for children at a local reservation.
