Thrift shops are an old tradition on almost every Air Force base around the world today. They were probably started with the intention of providing a convenient place where military families could quickly sell or buy household or personal items before or after our frequent moves and as our families grew.

Today however, thrift shops offer so much more. Not only does the thrift shop welcome items for resale on consignment, but they also accept donations in good condition that are sold to their customers for equally small prices. As a "consignee," you usually earn 70% of a consigned item's sale price, while the remainder funds annual scholarships for military children and spouses' continuing education. Without doubt, the thrift shop generates a big impact across our community.

The Davis-Monthan Thrift Shop is operated jointly by two private organizations: the D-M Enlisted Spouses Association and the D-M Officers' Spouses Club, and it's overseen by a council with representatives from both organizations. Most of the thrift shop workers are volunteers from those two organizations, Air Force and civilian retirees, active-duty Airmen, and a three-person paid staff. The staff consists of our manager, Ms. Donna Marie Coleman, our bookkeeper, Mrs. Nancy Rickert, and our custodian, Mr. Robert Koenigsdorf. They and the volunteers provide the D-M community with an outstanding place to shop, resell items, volunteer and make new friends - all while giving back to our community.

The thrift shop will have its Grand Reopening Aug. 3 at 775 5th St. (Bldg. 4201), in the old community center. It will be open every Tuesday and Wednesday and the first Saturday of each month from August 2010 through June 2011. For questions, call the shop at 520-228-2120.

For your convenience, you may now drop off donations at the thrift shop in the newly designated and monitored indoor location.
