The Sonoran Science Academy celebrated the completion of its first year with state-wide recognition May 18.

The Sonoran Science Academy has been selected as the 2009 Charter School of the Year in Arizona. The school, which opened on Davis-Monthan August 17 2009, prepares students for college by focusing on math, science, and technology.

Col. Charles Hunter, 355th Mission Support Group commander, was among those recognized for helping launch a successful year for the school.

The school was also presented with a grant from Arizona Physical Therapy Association.

"We are honored to receive the $1,000 grant from the AZTA, we intend to utilize the funds to promote disability awareness throughout the school year," said Simon Arriola, a physical education and Spanish teacher at the school.

To aid in this awareness the grant will be used to form a cycling club that will participate in Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Rides, which is a rehabilitative cycling program aimed towards helping wounded warriors reclaim their confidence and strength. High Desert Ride, where cyclists ride from Las Vegas to Phoenix, will be their first event.
