The base Volunteer Income Tax Assistance office is again providing free income tax assistance, preparation, and electronic filing for active-duty servicemembers and their spouses.

Due to the high demand for these important tax services, assistance is only available by appointment. Eligible members can call VITA at 228-3489 or visit the office.

Taxpayers must bring the following items to the VITA office for tax preparation:

· A copy of the 2008 federal and state tax return
· Military ID card, Social Security card(s) or letter from Social Security Administration indicating the social security number for yourself, spouse, and all dependents
· Forms W-2, 1099-R and other statements of reportable income such as Form SSA-1099
· Information for other income
· Information for deductions/credits (medical, home mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable contributions, child care expenses)
· Proof of account for direct deposit of refund (voided check)
· Applicable powers of attorney

This year, it is also important to bring in your real estate tax amounts even if you intend to use the standard deduction. Also, be sure to bring in the amount, if any, of the Economic Stimulus Rebate you received.

The VITA office is located in the Retiree Activities Office, Building 3210 on the northwest corner of Craycroft and Ironwood Streets (next to the base chapel and across from the Mirage Club). Appointment hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
