Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Office Opens Published Dec. 22, 2008 By Volunteer Income Tax Assistance office DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- Free income tax assistance, preparation, and electronic filing will be available beginning on Jan. 26 from the base Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) office. Due to the high demand for these important tax services, assistance is only available by appointment. Volunteers will be in the Desert Inn Dining Facility Jan. 5-9 to make appointments for active duty members and their spouses. Active duty members and their spouses may also make appointments in the lobby of the Base Exchange from Jan. 10-12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or beginning Jan. 13 by calling VITA at 228-3489 or visiting the office. Retirees can call or visit the office beginning Feb. 2. Taxpayers must bring the following items to the VITA office for tax preparation: · Military ID card, Social Security card(s) or letter from Social Security Administration indicating the social security number for yourself, spouse, and all dependents · Forms W-2, 1099-R and other statements of reportable income such as Form SSA-1099 · All appropriate expense information (medical, home mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable contributions, child care expenses) · Information on rental property and investment sales · Applicable powers of attorney · A copy of the 2007 federal (and state) tax return For direct deposit of tax refunds, a blank check or proof of your bank's routing number and account number is required. This year, it is also important to bring in your real estate tax amounts even if you intend to use the standard deduction. Also, be sure to bring in the amount, if any, of the Economic Stimulus Rebate you received. The VITA office is located in the Retiree Activities Office (RAO), Building 3210 on the northwest corner of Craycroft and Ironwood Streets (next to the base chapel and across from the Mirage Club). VITA appointment hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
