Operation COPE is fast approaching fruition for D-M. Operation COPE is a planned retreat co-sponsored by the Base Chapel and other Integrated Delivery Service agencies. The Operation COPE retreat is scheduled for Oct. 18 and 19 at the Sheraton Hotel and Suites on Grant Road.

"The Air Force and Air Combat Command specifically, have long recognized the stresses families go through with long deployments and absences," said Master Sgt. Tim Poling, Base Chapel superintendent. "To help strengthen marriages and families, ACC has provided funds to assist in sponsoring this local retreat."

Operation COPE is a successful program previously used at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and is designed to assist the family by connecting spouses/families to squadron support systems and base agencies; organizing resources to meet the real needs of deployers and their families; providing fun and relaxing opportunities to create shared memories; and educating Airmen in how to strengthen, sustain, and find ultimate success in their important relationships

The planned retreat targets military families who will be impacted by the upcoming AEF 7/8 rotation as well as those recently returned within the last three months.

"Our goal with this retreat is to provide training and activities which will assist members in strengthening their marriage and their family," indicates Chap. (Capt.) Kim Bowen, Operation COPE project coordinator.

"Our Military Family Life Counselor will also be available, providing training to youth ages seven to 12," said Else Milner, Airman and Family Readiness Center director. "Much of the cost is being absorbed by the Chapel; however families will pay $35 for the one-night stay. Cost includes meals and activities. The total value of this program is estimated to be more than $300."

"This is an excellent opportunity for families to connect prior to a deployment and establish rules of engagement following their deployment," said Chaplain Bowen. "We expect this retreat to be a lot of fun, fulfilling, and beneficial for all attendees. Family activities such as bowling, hiking and miniature putt-putt will be offered to families. While childcare will be the responsibility of those attending, several childcare opportunities will be available through the Child Development and Youth Center's during portions of the retreat. The focus is to keep the family together for as many activities during the retreat as possible."

Attendance at the retreat will be based on a priority system for 60 D-M married couples. Those individuals who will be departing for a deployment during AEF 7/8 will have priority for attendance followed by those who recently returned from deployment.

Couples may sign-up by calling the Airman and Family Readiness Center to request an application form at 228-5690. For more information concerning Operation COPE, individuals may call the A&FRC at 228-5690 or the Base Chapel at 228-5411.
