Governor Janet Napolitano came to the Mirage Officer's Club here July 21 to unveil the results of a new study from The Maguire Company on the economic significance of the state's military installations.

The study, based on a vast amount of 2005 data, is labeled the Economic Impact of Arizona's Principal Military Operations, and its findings showed a $9.1 billion impact from the five primary installations in the state - Davis-Monthan AFB, Luke AFB, Army Intelligence Center & Fort Huachuca, Yuma Army Proving Grounds and Marine Corps Air Station-Yuma - plus four additional National Guard operations.

The study also found that the military creates more than 96,000 jobs, directly and indirectly, throughout Arizona and that it contributes more than $401 million in tax payments.

Governor Napolitano said that Arizonans "should not take military presence here for granted" and that the new study gives lawmakers "a much better environment in which to make decisions" on military-related issues.

The Maguire Company, which provides analysis and consulting services to corporations and state and local government agencies, is an independent firm based in Phoenix, Ariz., specializing in econometric management and economic forecasting. The 2008 study is the second of its kind done by the company, and the governor said it shows a 61 percent overall increase from the first 2002 study.

A statement released by the Governor's office Monday said that no other state has conducted this type of economic analysis of the military. Though the study included nine military installations, no military contractors were included.

The luncheon event was sponsored by the DM-50, a local support group for the base.
