The Desert Lightning community is invited to participate in the First Six D-M Idol Contest tryouts held May 16 and June 6 in the Desert Oasis Enlisted Club ballroom beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The competition is open to active-duty members, civilians and dependents 16 years of age and older. Individuals, groups or bands are welcome to participate.

The idol contest began as an idea generated by Airmen in the D-M 1st Six organization, who then teamed up with the Culture of Responsible Choices committee to host the event.

Interested contestants will be evaluated on specific criteria in order to advance to the final idol competition.

"To move on from the original auditions, contestants will be judged on the following: vocal ability, appearance, stage presence, audience participation and audience reaction," said Staff Sgt. Zenobia Dukes, 355th Maintenance Operations Squadron unit education and training manager, and one of the organizer's for the idol event.

Those interested in participating in the contest need nothing other than to sign up prior to the tryouts.

"The auditions are a cappella, so nothing is required for vocal tryouts," Sergeant Dukes said. "Bands and instrumentalists must bring all required equipment for auditions."

After the final tryout is held June 6, the actual competition will be scheduled and the grand prize will be announced.

"We would like all to come tryout or just watch and have a good time," said Sergeant Dukes. "This is an opportunity to find talent in our local area, be entertained and utilize our base facilities."

To sign up, or for more information, call Sergeant Dukes at 228-4785, Staff Sgt. Katherine Edgar at 228-1666, or Senior Airman Roxann Cobb at 228-4724.
