Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Office now open Published Jan. 24, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Jamie L. Coggan 355th Fighter Wing Public Affairs DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Office here opened Jan. 23, and will be open until April 15 inside the Retiree Activities Office, Building 3210. There will be free income tax assistance, preparation, and electronic filing available through the base Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Office. The program, which is staffed by experienced volunteers, can help most members who file their tax returns electronically at the tax center receive their refunds in as little as one week. Each volunteer is specifically trained to address military-specific tax issues, such as combat zone tax benefits and the Earned Income Tax Credit guidelines. "D-M is fortunate to have a strong VITA program to assist members with their income tax questions and filing tax forms," said Staff Sgt. Joy Hollonquest, from the 355th Fighter Wing Legal Office here. Taxpayers must bring the following items when visiting the VITA office for tax preparation: Military ID card; Social Security card or record of Social Security number for themselves, spouse, and all dependents; names and birth dates of taxpayer, spouse and dependents; the federal (and state, if applicable) tax package the individual received in the mail; Forms W-2, 1099-R and other statements of reportable income such as Form SSA-1099; all appropriate expense information (medical, home mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable contributions, child care expenses); information on rental property and investment sales; applicable powers of attorney; and a copy of the 2006 federal (and state) tax return, if available. For direct deposit of refunds a blank check or proof of your bank routing number and account number is required. Active-duty members and their spouses may make required appointments starting Jan. 16, and retirees may make required appointments starting Feb.13 by calling 228-3489. VITA appointment hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Building 3210 is located on the Northwest corner of Craycroft and Ironwood Streets (next to the base chapel and across from the Mirage Officers' Club). To view the news clip, click here.
