More than 1,000 people attended this year's Safety Day Sept. 27 in the 358th Aircraft Maintenance Unit hangar.

"The annual Safety Day is held to mark the end of the 101 Critical Days of Summer Campaign, which ended Labor Day weekend, and also the end of the Fiscal Year," said Staff Sgt. Morgan McCormick, NCOIC of safety publicity and a primary coordinator for the event.

Airmen who attended the event were treated to a wealth of booths, exhibits, giveaways and information on critical safety issues, on- and off-duty.

"Several events involved drunk goggles, including free-throw shooting, riding tricycles, a dunk tank, field sobriety test from Tucson Police Department, motorcycle demonstrations and the Tucson Fire Department's fire extinguisher demonstration," Sergeant McCormick said.

Event organizers, Sergeant McCormick and Staff Sgt. James Miller, NCOIC of traffic safety, stated Safety Day 2007 set the precedence for next year's event, which is projected to occur around the same time as this year when the weather is in the lower temperatures.

The Safety Day coordinators are also working to expand the space capabilities, vendor options, games and to offer bigger and better door prizes for next year.

"This year's Safety Day captivated the attention of the Airmen with great demonstrations and meaningful briefings," said Staff Sgt. Michael Brown, 357th Aircraft Maintenance Unit NCOIC of debrief, who attended the event. "Everyone was able to learn something new and unlike past years, it was hard for an Airman to 'tune out' important information."

In addition to the Tucson police department and base fire department, the Tucson Sheriff's Department, Granger, Home Depot, Entomology, BX Commissary, Outdoor Recreation, Pima Community College, Culture of Responsible Choices, Airman Against Drunk Driving, Tucson Motor Sports, Jim Click Mazda and Gary's Towing all donated their time and resources to this event.

"The 355th Fighter Wing Ground Safety office would like to thank all the vendors that attended to make this day a success," Sergeant McCormick stated. "Our personal thanks to the Commissary and BX for donating food and prizes, Tucson Police Department for exceeding our expectations, Gary's Towing for the crash car, the 355th Logistics Readiness Squadron for their professional drivers and the 358th Fighter Squadron for the use of their hangar."
