Get home safe with AADD

DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --  It's been an evening of midwinter merriment at one of the local establishments. The bartender shouts "last call" and everyone clamors to the bar to grab one last drink or pay their tab for the evening. Among the crowd is a group of Airmen who have just realized that their designated driver got caught up in the festivities and consumed a couple of alcoholic beverages.

"Airmen Against Drunk Driving is the backup plan to the backup plan," said Senior Airman Donald Montes, 355th Communications Squadron communication security account manager and AADD president for D-M.

The service is available 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays for anyone in a 20-mile-radius of the base with a military ID card.

AADD is run completely by volunteers who work at D-M AFB. This year, more than 500 people have volunteered for approximately 600 pick-ups.

"When someone is out drinking and they have our number on them, it's the safest option to just give us a call," said Airman 1st Class Kyle Alverson, 42nd Electronic Combat Squadron analysis operator and AADD volunteer. "This will keep them and any others on the road out of harm's way."

Airmen should not fear reprisal for using the service because it is confidential. An Airman's last name and where they work will not be asked or recorded.

"We want to help you and we don't want to punish you for being helped," Montes said.
