D-M celebrates the Biomedical Science Corps 50th anniversary

DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --  The Biomedical Science Corps is preparing to kick off a weeklong celebration for their 50th anniversary.

The BSC encompasses 15 Air Force Specialty Codes, ten of which are at D-M to include optometry, physical therapy, clinical phycology, bioenvironmental engineers,
biomedical laboratory, pharmacy, aerospace and operational physiology, public health, physician assistants, and clinical social work.

"We have so many awesome people doing so many different things," said Capt. Katherine Murphy, 355th Medical Support Squadron chief of pharmacy operations and celebration coordinator. "We want to highlight what we do and bring awareness to the base."

The BSC celebration will begin Jan. 26, where there will be many opportunities for Desert Lighting Team members to visit the 355th MDSS and learn about the different services they provide. There will also be videos posted to the D-M Facebook page highlighting these events.

"Posters will be displayed in the med group showing what BSC career fields are represented at D-M, as well as on the TV screens in the fighter wing building," Murphy said. "This is another way for people to get to know more about what we do."

A luncheon is scheduled in conjunction with the BSC celebration Wednesday. The event is intended to give the BSC's officers a chance to express their gratitude toward their staff and to present Col. Bruce Edwards, 355th Medical Group commander, with a plaque commemorating the BSC's 50th anniversary.

"We have 23 officers in our corps," said Murphy. "However, we also have enlisted staff in a parallel career field whom without, we wouldn't be able to do everything we do."

D-M members can join the BSC in a "lunch and learn" Thursday at noon where physician's assistants and lab officers will discuss the different programs provided by the Air Force to cross train into those career fields.

"Airmen can learn how to attain those career fields through the personal experience of the PAs and officers," said Murphy.

All these events, except for the BSC luncheon, are open for all DLT members. 

"It's hard for the rest of the base to know the services we provide and get to know us as Airmen and not just as health care providers," said Murphy. "I'm hoping to get us more involved with base activities."
