The Never Forgotten 9/11 Tower Challenge was held at the University of Arizona Football Stadium, Tucson, Ariz., Sept. 11, 2014.

Approximately 350 participants, including personnel from D-M, attempted the challenge of climbing 2,071 stairs. This feat symbolized the 110 floors of each Twin Tower of the World Trade Center.

"Myself and the First Sergeants Council came to represent Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the rest of the first sergeants for Sept. 11 to remember all the first responders and heroes that have served and died since," said Master Sgt. Kyle Capehart, 355th Security Forces Squadron first sergeant. "At D-M, we have deployed more than 30,000 Airmen since Sept. 11, 2001 and four have fallen in a deployed environment under combat and we want to honor those people."

The event was hosted by the Greater Tucson Fire Foundation to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and the first responders and military who continue to protect the nation from foreign and domestic threats.

"If this doesn't unite us as brothers and sisters, I'm not sure what would," said Rick Grinnell, Arizona Fisher House Foundation vice chairman and 43rd Electronic Combat Squadron honorary commander. "We're fortunate, in this country, to take care of our own."
