Suicide claims more than 38,000 lives per year in the United States. That is equivalent to one suicide every 14 minutes. A suicide attempt is made every minute of every day, resulting in nearly one million attempts annually. However, when you walk in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Walk (www.afsp.org), you join thousands nationwide in the effort to raise money toward the foundation's vital research and education programs in order to help prevent suicide. The walks raise awareness about depression and suicide, while providing comfort, assistance and a sense of solidarity to those who have lost someone to suicide.

Tucson's Out of the Darkness Walk is scheduled for Sunday October 5, 2014, starting at 9:15 a.m. at Reid Park. There will be a recovery expo present after the walk for everyone who participates. The expo will include many local community organizations that worked together to make the walk possible. This event is not only an annual memorial, but also a celebration and awareness event full of remembrance, fun and opportunities to gain support and information about wellness and recovery programs.

If you would like to volunteer for fundraising efforts, participate in the Out of the Darkness Walk or have any questions, feel free to contact Senior Airman Katie Rosales, installation Out of the Darkness Walk POC, at katie.rosales@us.af.mil.
