So you're getting out of the military and you're trying to figure what's next for your life. The initial thought that comes to most people's mind is what am I going to do first.

The conversion from military to civilian life can be stressful but the military has a variety of ways to help through the Transition Assistance Program.

According to Air Force Personnel Center, the Transition Assistance Program was reformatted into a comprehensive, mandatory program that all transitioning military personnel are required to participate in.

Here at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, service members who are anticipating separation are encouraged to attend the Transition Goals, Plans, Success class one year prior to their projected separation date.

"(Transition GPS) gives service members a chance to adequately prepare for civilian employment, as well as minimizing the impact on work centers by spreading out classes," said Joy Hopper, Airman and Family Readiness Center representative.

Transition GPS, includes a five-day workshop with additional days of optional training depending upon the path the service member select.

Also, retiring members are encouraged to attend two years prior to their anticipated retirement date.
