A free family event was held in the base chapel parking lot here Dec. 3.

The tenth annual "Starry, Snowy, Southwest Night" was organized by Outdoor Recreation and the Base Chapel with 23 volunteer Airmen assisting during the event.

Fifty tons of snow were split into two areas for people of all ages to play in and an ice rink was set up for ice skating. Other festivities included hayrides and photos with Santa. Hot chocolate and fresh baked cookies were provided.

"It's just really great for the kids because they miss out on snow being in Arizona," said Staff Sgt. Robert Bass, 755th Operation Support Squadron. "They got to come out and have a night of winter--real winter."

Col. Greg Williams, 355th Mission Support Group commander, welcomed everyone in attendanceĀ then introduced Santa during a tree lighting ceremony. Santa invited children of deployed Airmen to assist him in lighting the base Christmas tree.

Approximately 2,200 people came out to enjoy the festivities.
