The September 11 attacks were launched by Al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

The attacks killed almost 3,000 people and caused at least $10 billion in property damage.

The damaged section of the Pentagon was rebuilt & occupied within a year. The temporary World Trade Center Port Authority Trans-Hudson station opened in late 2003 and construction of the new 7 World Trade Center was completed in 2006. On May 20, 2013, One World Trade Center became the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani proclaimed, "The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit, instead, we have emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic, and religious freedom, the rule of law, and respect for human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in freedom."
