Fallen Airmen Awarded Silver Star
DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. - Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz presents the Silver Star to the family of Capt. Nathan J. Nylander in a ceremony at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., Sept. 24, 2011. The captain’s wife, Miriam, and their children, (left to right) Elisabeth, Andru and Tyler, accepted the posthumous award for Nylander’s actions at Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan on April 27, 2011. Nylander engaged an Afghan Air Force officer who was firing on American servicemembers and civilians at the deployed location. His actions prevented further loss of life at the hands of the gunman.
