Davis-Monthan traffic accident fatality named

Senior Airman Brian D. Smith, 23, assigned to the 923rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, was pronounced dead after a vehicle accident near the intersection of Interstate 10 and Kolb at about 4:30 a.m. Dec. 11.

Airman Smith was an active duty assistant dedicated crew chief. He enlisted into the Air Force in July 2007, and he arrived at D-M in February 2008. His home town was Simi Valley, Calif. Airman Smith was promoted to senior airman Dec. 17, 2009 and had been awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and NATO Medal.

"Airman Smith was an important part of the Desert Lightning family, and he will be missed," said Col. John A. Cherrey, 355th Fighter Wing commander. "We stand with his family and his squadron in this difficult time."

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident.
