FSS hosts “Battle of the Sexes” basketball game

DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- The Equipment Maintenance Squadron men's basketball team reined victorious, 67-64, during the "Battle of the Sexes" basketball game hosted by the 355th Force Support Squadron at the Benko gym April 6.

The EMS base champion men's team took on the Davis-Monthan women's varsity team in a high-pressure game.

The event was put together by Master Sgt. Luis Colon, 355th EMS nondestructive inspection section chief and men's basketball team coach, Deia Mack, women's basketball couch, and Senior Airman Mackeil Wilkes, 355th FSS sports director.

"This was a morale-boosting activity," Wilkes said. "We also wanted to promote the intramural sports program. We also wanted to bring everyone together for a sporting event. We hope to have a larger turn out next time."

At half time, the EMS men's team was in the lead, 37-19.

During the break, there was a 3-point contest. Four people were chosen at random and given one minute to shoot 12 shots from the 3-point line. The winner of the contest was 2nd Lt. Liezl-Anne Sarte, 612th Air Communications Squadron officer in charge combined air operations center systems. Lieutenant Sarte made 7 out of 12 shots.

During the second half, the men's team continued their lead and emerged victorious with a final score of 67-34.

"The team played great," Colon said. "They looked a little nervous at first, playing the women, but once they got comfortable they played well. There was definitely a little added pressure playing the women. It feels great to win."
