D-M holds Day of Remembrance to honor Holocaust victims Published April 10, 2012 355th Fighter Wing Equal Opportunity Office DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- On April 17, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base will take time to honor victims of the Holocaust. Through the stories of five Holocaust survivors and a Holocaust historian, our community will gain a rare glimpse into the lives of those tormented by the horrors of the era. The Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Day of Remembrance is a chance to honor those lost and pay our respects to those who live on to share their memories. The Day of Remembrance will begin the morning of April 17 at five locations across the installation. Five Holocaust survivors will meet with base personnel, share their stories, and answer questions. Base personnel are welcome to attend any of the five sessions. The sessions will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Base Theater, the 48th Rescue Squadron, the 355th Medical Group and at two locations within the Mirage club. Directly following, the Day of Remembrance events will finish with a Candlelight Vigil at the Hope Chapel, scheduled for 11 a.m. This year's event specifically observes stories of rescue behind the Holocaust. Brave men and women made the choice to take action to rescue victims regardless of the risks. We are challenged to remember the importance of freedom, treating others with decency and taking a stand against hate. The Day of Remembrance is an incredible opportunity for military personnel to interact with those impacted by these influential events. It is a chance for education and insight - and most importantly, it is a significant reminder of why liberty and equality are forefront in our commitment to national service. Please join us as we honor these survivors and reflect on a history we hope never to repeat. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Capt. Christie Jones, Day of Remembrance Project Officer, at 228-5242.
