Mrs. Amy Rubin, a Michigan resident, visited the base June 9 to donate $400 to the education office.

Mrs. Rubin formed a partnership with a multi-campus, nationwide university that wishes to remain anonymous, and she's in the middle of a charitable motorcycle trip across the United States. After starting in northern California, she stopped here at D-M and will continue to several more military installations before finishing at Langley AFB, Va. At every stop, she will be donating $400 of the university's money to promote education awareness and encourage people to pursue their educational goals.

Mrs. Rubin, also the spouse of an Air National Guard fighter pilot, has worked as a military development specialist for 11 years. She hopes her trip will bring more attention to the education benefits available to servicemembers.

"While counseling airmen I have found that sometimes there is a disconnect. Even though the base tells folks to use their education benefits , once in a while it takes a little bit of something to get people's attention," she said. "I felt like something like this might do that."

Mr. Phil King from the base education office said the $400 donation would be used for a single active-duty student, selected based on grade-point average, number of classes attended and degree goal. "The funds will be used for tuition, books or something academic," he said.

Mrs. Rubin's husband is Capt. Jon "Chester" Rubin of the 107th Fighter Squadron "Red Devils" at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich. Captain Rubin is currently transitioning from the F-16 to the A-10 at Barksdale AFB, La. He's scheduled to come to D-M afterward to finish his A-10 training.
