Safety takes center stage: 101 Critical Days of Summer are here

DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. --  Summertime has arrived, and with it begins the 101 Critical Days of Summer 2007 campaign. This year's campaign began at 4 p.m May 25 and will end at 7 a.m. Sep. 4. During last year's 101 CDOS campaign, the Air Force experienced 18 fatalities - a significant decrease from the 29 fatalities during the same period in 2005. 

As in past years, motor vehicle mishaps accounted for most of the Air Force losses last year. Some of the factors in these mishaps included speeding, not using seatbelts, or riding motorcycles without helmets. 

This year the 355th Fighter Wing Safety office has adopted the topic "I can save my life...and others too" as a theme. One of the focus points for this summer is traffic safety. Twice a week, safety office will coordinate with security forces, the First Term Airman Center, and squadron safety representatives to highlight traffic safety education through "Random Acts of Safety." 

The first Random Act of Safety was performed May 4. Forty-five volunteers, along with Vince and Larry, the crash test dummies, were present, waving to everyone and reminding them to drive safely. Volunteers carried crosses to represent how many people have died from motor vehicle mishaps during this fiscal year alone.
