Airmen participate in local schools Career Day

DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz., --  Desert Lightning Team members volunteered at Dietz Elementary School for career day, Jan. 29, 2014.

Staff Sgt. Ki Nam, 355th Security Forces Squadron Military Dog handler, brought his partner, Benny, 355th SFS MWD, to the school to show and tell students about his career.

Students ranging from the first grade through the sixth grade participated in career day.
"This is my first time participating in an event like this," Nam said. "I think the children will enjoy learning about working close with animals, more specifically the importance of a military working dog."

Events like this one give military members a chance to educate the local community about what their career field and their role in the military.

"I think it is important to take part in events such as this one, because it allows us to give back to the community and to show them, that we are friendly," Nam said. "It allows us to tell our own story."

Several members of the Tucson community and D-M volunteered to participate in the career day to give students an idea of future career options.

"A lot of the people taking part in career day were selected based off of students' interest," said Victoria Arrieta, Dietz Elementary School Resource Special Education Teacher. "The military is one of the bigger interests for our sixth grade class, so we really appreciated having them come out."

Students were not the only ones eager to have Airmen participate in their career day.

"We are extremely grateful for the outreach we get from Davis-Monthan," Arrieta said. "I think the military is a great choice for the young men and women of tomorrow, and I feel it is important to expose children to the sacrifice our service men and women make on a daily basis."
