The 2012 Intramural Basketball season is preparing to kick off on D-M.

During the season, squadrons get together their best players and those individuals enter the league as a team. Teams enter under their squadron name and each squadron can submit up to two teams depending on their size.

"My squadron is currently back-to-back champions for both the Intramural and Over-30 leagues," said Master Sgt. Luis Colon, 355th Equipment Maintenance Squadron nondestructive inspection section chief. "Having Airmen that work in different sections work together on a basketball team helps to boost morale and develop teamwork and leadership skills within the players."

The basketball season usually lasts around two to three months, during which about 13 games are played.

Last season, more than 20 teams from squadrons all over D-M participated in intramural basketball.

"Intramural sports aren't just for a bunch of guys and girls playing sports," said Senior Airman Mackeil Wilkes, 355th Force Support Squadron fitness specialist said. "It positively affects the mission because it's teambuilding that you establish outside of the workplace in an active environment."
