Unusual Aircraft to Fly in Southern Arizona Published Dec. 14, 2011 By 021211 DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- Tucson residents may see an unusual aircraft flying into and out of D-M Air Force Base Dec. 16-18. A CV-22 Osprey from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., will be conducting low-level training operations Dec. 17 around southern Arizona. The aircraft is known for its vertical-takeoff abilities, its speed and its range. It was developed by the Joint-Service Vertical Takeoff Landing Aircraft Experimental Program in 1981 and the current version of the CV-22 was approved by the Pentagon in 2005.
